My e-bike won’t turn on – what should I do?

E-bike with a Shimano motor and top tube power button can’t be switched on using the power button.

Your bike’s power button has an internal battery. If the battery has too little charge, then it won’t work. There are three possible solutions:

1. Try turning your e-bike on using the button on the battery. Then, you can ride the e-bike, and the top tube power button will be charged as you ride.

2. If you charge the main battery while it’s installed in the bike, that will also charge the power button. To give the button enough time to charge, the main battery should be nearly empty when you start charging, and you should charge it for at least 3 hours.

3. Take your battery to a specialist dealer, who can connect it to a PC and perform a diagnostics check on the battery. This requires E-Tube software version V4.0.4 or higher on the PC. For charging, the power button is connected individually. After connecting their computer to the battery, the dealer can perform an error diagnostics check under Maintenance. A ‘Load button’ appears afterwards. After pressing the button, the display is loaded. All information from Shimano can be found here.

If you have a Shimano equipped bike, with Shimano Battery and Shimano power switch pay attention.

I was on vacation with my 2021 Heckler. When I went to go for a ride the power switch would only flicker, when I continued trying to power up the bike by pushing the button several times the light stopped flickering completely .

I called Shimano Dealer Customer Service at 1 Holland, Irvine CA and got the following information.

The button has a battery inside and can be recharged if only dead and not defective.

If you want to try to recharge the battery in the switch, you will need a SHIMANO PC connection device (SM-PCE02) with the proper cables.

We ordered the proper cables and should have them by Friday and will give it a proper try.

Unbeknownst to us, we have changed out 5-6 dead switches in the last two years because the batteries had died, not knowing they could have been charged.

You don’t need the Shimano PC connection device to charge the power button. I’ve had this happen a few times on my Devinci AC.

You need to be able to access the hard power button on the actual battery and get that to turn on which will then power on the on/off switch.
And then over the next couple days keep turning the bike on which in turn keeps recharging the little battery inside of the on/off switch.

It’s a pretty stupid design that when you charge your ebike it doesn’t charge the on/off switch at the same time.

Had the same problem twice, both times after three days not riding. taped a 14 mm plastic plug to the battery start button and slowly pushed the battery in until display lights up and then left the battery hanging in the first lock, not completely pushed in, after 20 min i removed the plug , pushed the battery in and start the bike. My warranty expires in februari , then I will drill a small 2 mm hole in the frame above the battery start button. The yellow dot in the picture is the position of the bottle holder skrew, the new to drill hole will be invisible, covered by the bottle holder, approx 2.5 cm higher.
