The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph (Ref. IW377701) is the definitive „modern classic“ from IWC’s aviation lineage. Released in 2012 as an evolution of the beloved 3717, it maintains the rigorous cockpit-instrument aesthetic while introducing more contemporary dimensions and unique design elements.
The Movement: IWC Caliber 79320
While IWC has recently moved toward in-house calibers, the IW377701 is powered by the legendary Caliber 79320.
- Base: A heavily modified and refined Valjoux 7750.
- Functionality: It is a robust, automatic integrated chronograph capable of recording single and intermediate times up to 12 hours.
- Specs: 28,800 vph (4Hz), 25 jewels, and a 44-hour power reserve.
- Why it matters: This movement is famous for its „wobble“ (the tactile feeling of the rotor spinning) and its bulletproof reliability. It is far easier and more affordable to service than IWC’s newer in-house equivalents.
Materials & Build
- Case: 43mm Stainless Steel with a mix of brushed (satin) surfaces and polished chamfers. It stands relatively tall at 15mm, giving it a commanding wrist presence.
- Glass: Convex Sapphire crystal with an antireflective coating on both sides. It is specially secured against displacement caused by drops in air pressure (a vital feature for actual pilots).
- Strap: Traditionally paired with a black alligator leather strap with white contrast stitching and a stainless steel pin buckle.
- Magnetic Protection: It features a soft-iron inner case, a „Faraday cage“ that protects the mechanical movement from the strong magnetic fields found in cockpits or near modern electronics.
Unique Specifics & Design
- The „Altimeter“ Date: The most defining feature of the IW377701 is the triple date window at 3 o’clock. It was designed to mimic the vertical altimeter of a plane, showing the yesterday, today, and tomorrow dates. (Note: IWC simplified this back to a single date in later 2016 versions).
- Running Seconds: The sub-dial at 9 o’clock features a small red hand, providing a necessary pop of color and serving as a quick visual indicator that the watch is running.
- Water Resistance: Rated at 6 bar (60 meters). While not a diver, its screw-down crown ensures it can handle daily splashes and rain with ease.
The Verdict
The Ref. IW377701 is the „purist’s“ choice for those who like the larger, instrument-heavy look of IWC. It’s the last of its kind before IWC began shrinking the Pilot cases and removing the unique triple-date window.
